August 8th, 2011 A levee team from UCLA,  UCB, DWR, and US Army Corps had a call meeting at August 8th. A new member (Rod Mayer) in DWR replaced Mike Inamine's position. The main focus of this meeting was to discuss the scope of the research. We are looking at world case histories of levee failure, design, and criteria of levee. We look in depth in Japan. To investigate levee in Japan, we need to find appropriate government agency in Japan. Dikes and canals are considered for possible levee cases because they are holding water like levees. UCLA will look for pre-earthuqake information on repair rate, non-seismic performance, to evaluate it as an indicator of seismic performance...

July 11th, 2011 A levee team including UCLA(Jonathan P. Stewart, Scott J. Brandenberg, and Dong Youp Kwak), UCB (Raymond B. Seed and Juan M. Pestana), DWR (Ariya Balakrishna, Mike Inamine, and Les Harder), and US Army Corps (Vlad Perea) had a project kick-off meeting at DWR office in Sacramento. They talked about background, requirements, and future works for the research. The background consists of existing levee criteria and guidelines. Those criteria and guidelines have been written to satisfy 200-year flood protection. The documents mentioned here were ILDC, CVFPP, FEMA, Corps, and URS...

Pre-research Activities (~July, 2011)  Permit applications have been approved by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board.
